{ Psychology + Interdisciplinary Arts = Psychologartistry } WOOT! WOOT!

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) is the most recent update to the American Psychiatric Association's classification and diagnostic tool, a widely accepted instrument for psychiatric diagnosis. Treatment guidance and therapeutic intervention models for psychiatric conditions are often established by DSM classifications and coding. As a once licensed psychotherapist and community organizer, I have come to simultaneously love and abhor this semiotic tool, the ease at which we can compartmentalize and label, marginalize or ignore, fix or abandon.

Given my background in social work and psychology, my art and research remain transdisciplinary and interventionistic, often merging the methodologies and foundational tenets of the social sciences with the core principles of the visual and performing arts. These intermedia projects are regularly classified according to a specific DSM-5 diagnostic code and corresponding “psychosocial symptomatology,” positing my practice as a "crude" longitudinal qualitative case study and critical (albeit eccentric and often sardonic) exploration into the human condition.
